The space was great, and I loved that tables and chairs were included. It saved me from having rentals to the space. My party was a success, and the extra room was useful for storing things out of the way.

This location is fantastic,. The space is huge and has a lot of rooms that you wouldn't expect it to have from just viewing it from the outside. The communication and accessibility was top notch from the beginning scout straight through until we wrapped. Sally was there every step of the way to make sure we were provided with everything we needed to make our filming go as smooth as possible. And, she even went out of her way to accommodate the director when he made a "special" request. You can't go wrong with filming at this location. We searched a lot of locations and this one was perfect for our needs. I hope to get a chance to film there again. I highly recommend this location!

AWESOME location, Nick (host) was incredibly helpful and easy to work with. The garage looks like a production designer went in there and built it, so if you're looking for a location that's pre set dressed, this is perfect. Plenty of parking, plenty of space, and so much character in the space. Highly recommend !

About Dilapidated Locations

Dilapidated locations provide unique backdrops for various events, photoshoots, and video productions. With some creativity, these spaces can be transformed into memorable settings for diverse occasions. Several dilapidated locations have historical significance drenched with fascinating stories to share. Visitors will appreciate exploring an environment full of character and life.

The physical characteristics of dilapidated locations vary significantly, but some features stand out. These old structures tend to have cracked walls, graffiti-covered, broken windows, and exposed wiring. The landscape is often uneven or filled with debris from past constructions or demolitions. The exteriors also show signs of aging through the wall, outdoor furniture, or other items left behind by previous occupants.

These decrepit sites also possess unique aesthetic qualities that create string backdrops for photos. For example, peeling paint and rusting fixtures create a vintage vibe, while chipped tiles and worn floorboards exude a sense of classic charm. Adding natural elements such as plants, trees, and vines to the space helps bring life to the otherwise austere setting.

All in all, dilapidated locations offer something special for event planners looking for a unique setting for their event. Not only do they possess intriguing characteristics that set them apart from traditional venues, but they’re also sure to leave guests with lasting memories.

The Best Events for Dilapidated Locations

  • Theatre Performances
Theatre performances in a dilapidated setting provide a captivating backdrop to the action onstage. Such a venue creates a unique atmosphere, with crumbling walls and exposed pipes adding to the sense of mystery. The audience might feel part of the performance, with interactive elements such as props and fixtures helping bring the story to life. The lighting and sound design needs some thought to ensure the production is not too overbearing while providing an engaging experience.

  • Music Festivals
Hosting a music festival in a dilapidated building or surrounding area offers music lovers a unique experience. Such a setting provides eye-catching visuals, from graffiti-covered walls and rusting machinery to worn-out staircases and unusual alcoves. Live performances, DJs, and light shows could further enhance the experience. With creative planning, guests are sure to enjoy food prepared onsite in pop-up restaurants or outdoor grills and participate in activities such as dancing or painting murals.

  • Art Exhibitions
An art exhibition in a dilapidated location allows guests to explore their creative side and discover new artwork. The occasion could do with customization from artists painting directly onto the walls. Alternatively, hanging ready-made pieces of art around the space creates unique visuals that capture the essence of the location’s history. Interactive elements such as sculptures or installations are also ideal for such a setting. Depending on how hosts decorate and organize such an event, it can be incredibly immersive for those who attend.

  • Weddings
Nuptials set against the backdrop of a dilapidated setting leave a lasting impression because of the unique nature of the venue. The vintage atmosphere gives the ceremony a deep sense of history and charm and creates an edgy backdrop. The setting is best adorned with rustic tables and vintage dinnerware, or stand around an outdoor bonfire to share stories, play music, and roast marshmallows. Soft candlelight, twinkling fairy lights, subtle music, and vintage decorations create a unique ambiance for the occasion.

What to Look for in Dilapidated Locations

  • Safety
When choosing a dilapidated location for your event, safety is of the utmost importance. You should assess the property for any potential hazards like exposed wiring, weak staircases, or broken glass and make sure necessary repairs are made before the material day. Install good lighting around the property perimeter and pathways leading to it that could pose trip hazards in low-light conditions.

  • Cleanliness
While some dilapidated locations may appear dirty and run-down at first glance, there are still measures you can take to restore the spaces to clean and presentable environments. Before booking the venue, inspect it closely for debris and other potential contaminants that could pose health risks to your guests. As part of ongoing maintenance, consider hiring a professional cleaning company to keep the space as clean as possible at all times.

  • Amenities
To host a successful event at a dilapidated location, certain amenities must be provided such as adequate seating, restrooms, food service areas, and electricity if needed. Access to audio-visual equipment or large-scale kitchen appliances like ovens or stoves is also important, if food will be served onsite.

  • Local Regulations
Look into local laws and regulations that may affect your ability to legally host an occasion at such a location. You don’t want the hassle of dealing with unexpected fines or even facing legal action due to non-compliance with relevant ordinances or clauses in your contract agreement.

How to Make Dilapidated Location Events Better

  • Research Potential Locations
Before selecting a dilapidated venue for an event, it is important to thoroughly research potential locations. Determine the age of the building and its condition based on photographs or in-person site visits. Additionally, consider any costs associated with bringing the building up to code, such as repairs required or installations like electricity, plumbing, and fire alarms.

  • Visit During Different Times of Day
When exploring potential venues, schedule visits at different times of the day. Take note of the surrounding noises and figure out if they drastically change depending on the time of day. This may affect guests’ comfort levels or make it harder to hear speakers during speeches.

  • Consider Unconventional Layouts
Dilapidated buildings provide unique layouts that may not be available in traditional venues. For example, open spaces with minimal furniture are ideal platforms for performances, presentations, benefit dinners, and weddings.
  • Bring in Ample Lighting
Depending on the age and condition of a dilapidated building, it may require a lot more lighting than a modern venue due. That is to address poor insulation or too much natural light flooding in from windows and skylights that cannot be easily blocked out. Use different types of lighting that enhance the tone of the event; for example, led rope lights are suitable for performances and dim lanterns work for dinners.

  • Plan ahead
A dilapidated location is likely not as structurally sound as a modern venue so it is important to plan ahead when constructing decorations or setting up equipment like audiovisuals systems or DJ booths. These elements should be properly secured so that they do not become hazards during an occasion with large crowds. Have an engineer on hand who can inspect the construction processes before the function begins, if necessary.
