As a producer there's so much I'm dealing with at any time and I'm so grateful for our host's responsiveness and being so accommodating to our needs. They made my life so much easier in that regard so I could focus on the hundred other things that needed my attention throughout pre-production and the day of the shoot. And of course the space is so cute! Great for filming family scenes. Would absolutely recommend!

Great space for a video or photo shoot. Tons of natural light from the large windows facing the living room and kitchen so getting a clean shot for our interview that was properly white balanced was a breeze. Very clean unit with chic decor. Jessica, our host, was super responsive and helpful. Highly recommended and will be reserving her place again.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Washington DC for Filming

Washington DC might be a grand favorite for many filmmakers but like every city, there are things to be said for both for and against it!

Advantages

  • A vibrant food scene, excellent hotels, and shopping areas like Georgetown Park are definite pros. After all, Hollywood elite like Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington film and spend long periods here.

  • Stunning architecture and iconic sites mean that there are a lot of places to see and things to do in your free time. You can go off on and look at the locales where Forrest Gump was filmed.

  • Cities like New York are a very easy commute away so getting access to artists and musicians from NYC is no trouble!

Disadvantages

  • Washington DC can be pretty expensive and even apart from venues, there are a lot of expenses during filming.

  • Summers in DC can be very hot and muggy and accompanied by all kinds of bugs!

  • Noise pollution and big crowds are a huge problem while shooting in Washington DC, especially if you're doing outdoor shoots.

Choosing the Right Type of Location for Filming in Washington DC

Washington DC's most iconic buildings, like the Lincoln Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, actually aren't ideal shooting locations, given all the permits and the crowds and the noise. So why don't you look to Giggster and find the perfect spot from among 353 venues?

Mansions and Houses – Film in Luxury. Explore one of the many old mansions or homes in DC with their old fireplaces, creaking wooden floors, and tons of history that are seeped into the very halls. Imagine a historical drama or horror film set against the backdrop of five-bedroom homes and quiet, tree-lined lanes.

Rooftops – Capture the View. Don't miss out on views of downtown DC and so many iconic buildings from one of the rooftop spaces that we have for rent. Fashion shoots, music videos, films, and TV shows alike work well against a sunny deck or a rooftop garden. You can arrange for night videography so that you capture the lights of the city in the background.

Studio – A Convenient Backdrop. In case you're filming a commercial shoot or a podcast or interview between two actors telling the story of their lives, a cozy and intimate studio often works best. The comfy vibes and acoustics are unrivaled and you won't be able to achieve the same effects elsewhere.

Restaurants/Bars – Vibrant Atmospheres. If you can book out an entire restaurant or bar for your filming then you can get your desired privacy along with an atmospheric setting. From a colorful, vibrant Mexican restaurant to charming French cafes with sprigs of greenery all around, your film or music video will benefit from the picturesque setting.

Garden – Feast Your Eyes on the Green. Whether this is a garden and terrace attached to a manor, complete with stone railings and courtyards or it's just a wild backyard with a wooden patio, these verdant outdoor spaces are a nice break to the monotony of manmade wonders.

Planning Your Filming in Washington DC

Want to make your mark in the film world by shooting an iconic scene at the National Mall? Well, you can certainly do that if you start by taking things step-by-step. Being organized can make the most overwhelming tasks seem simple!

Do a Script Breakdown – Breaking down a script will help you figure out what kind of locations, props, and actors you might need, and doing this first of all is a huge part of not wasting time and resources! If you've got a plan of action worked out straight off the bat, you'll know exactly what you need later on.

Scope Out Locations – The US capital is certainly not lacking in exciting and picturesque venues but scouting them out before the actual day of filming helps you visualize the shots. Does the loft that you're booking actually have room for all the props? Do you know what the most important scenes are and how they can be grouped together during filming?

Decide on Cast and Crew – This is a matter of availability and scheduling just as much as it is suitability. There's no point in employing people or casting your actors and then finding out they've got other commitments that'll clash with your filming. As you can see, producing art is all about forward planning.

Delegate to Team Members – And finally, when it comes to the not-so-little logistics like hotels, flight tickets, food and beverages, and trying to get hold of last-minute equipment, you should trust your team to have your back. No one can take care of everything!

Saving Money on Filming in Washington DC

Filming certainly isn't cheap! It's not a matter of whipping out your camera from your backpack and shooting some scene playing out in front of your eye. So how can we minimize costs and expenses in small ways?

Stick to your shooting schedule.

A clear plan of action helps you make the most of your resources in the smallest amount of time and with the minimum budget. One example would be knowing the schedules of your entire cast and crew so there aren't days where some people are available and some aren't.

Visualize your shots ahead of time.

Can you shoot several scenes in and around the same location instead of going back and forth across the city, even if they're not in order? Should you think about these things well in advance, you'll save time and money instead of running about all over town.

What props do the venues have?

For example, if you're filming a podcast then it's best to choose a studio that comes equipped with chairs in the first place, along with all the lighting and sound equipment. Or in a scene where you might need a baby grand piano, maybe you can look for a house that already has one instead of renting!

Washington DC Filming with Giggster

Whether you're looking for a sleek and chic conference room in one of the many clubs and lounges in the nation's capital or a brick colonial home with jaw-dropping autumn colors on the street, Giggster is sure to find you a property that will fit all the themes and aesthetics of your film or video!
