About the Space
This is one of San Diego's oldest, most inclusive, friendly, and fun dive bars, with a rich history dating back to 1924 when it was originally known as Murphy’s Beer Garden. The historic site was built on land excavated in the early 1900s to access an aqueduct running between Mission Bay and San Diego Bay. During Prohibition, it operated as a speakeasy and began earning a reputation in the 1940s as a safe space for the LGBTQ+ community. Nicknamed “The 19th Hole” by those in the know, it became one of San Diego’s “secret handshake” bars, frequented by men seeking connection in an era of limited acceptance. It was even listed as off-limits to military personnel. In the 1960s, following a change in ownership, it became one of San Diego’s first openly gay bars. The name was shortened, marking the start of a new and more open chapter. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, it evolved into a beloved community hangout. It was during this time that the iconic Sunday Beer Bust began—an event known for fresh fried chicken and a lively, welcoming crowd. Over the years, the bar has had several owners but has always remained a place rooted in tolerance, acceptance, and fun. While the fried chicken is no longer served, today the venue offers food, cocktails, mocktails, and entertainment for all to enjoy.
